Counselling and Play Therapy in Schools

schoolHow does it work?

Therapy, or the development of work on particular issues and themes, can be offered to individuals or small groups. Specific subject areas may include:

  • self expression and confidence building
  • self image and self esteem
  • body image
  • the understanding of anger
  • relationships
  • bullying

Each group deals with the specific issues at hand, facilitated through a multi-arts approach. Individual or group therapy is available on a sessional basis.

All one-to-one therapy is done in regular consultation with the parent or guardian and appropriate school staff members. This is an integral and important part of the work.

Benefit for the school

The school will be able to demonstrate that it is delivering focussed interventions for children with emotional, social, behavioural problems or with familial difficulty.

The children will be more able to engage in, and participate with the different aspects of school life, increasing the likelihood of more successful learning and target achievement.

Our school employed Helen to allow children (particularly early years and key stage 1) to access therapeutic interventions to support their social and emotional development. Often these children come from difficult backgrounds and have undergone a lot of emotional distress in their early years. Working with Helen has allowed these children to access counselling at a child’s level. We found that Helen’s specific skill set was beneficial in supporting these children and their families.

The pupil premium allowed us to fund the support to help looked after children, children with special guardianship orders, children on child protection plans and other vulnerable groups within our school.

We have always found Helen to be professional and approachable and the children love her sessions. The sessions Helen has provided have enabled the children to develop their social and emotional skills by exploring their feelings via play. It also provides them with a safe environment in which to address complex issues which many of the children have.”
