Family therapy

school2We offer therapy for families which might be in the form of using creative techniques to explore the dynamics of the family unit or using filial play therapy.

Filial Play Therapy

In Filial Play Therapy, the relationship between parent and child is emphasized as a means of alleviating the child and/or family difficulties. Here the parents learn to conduct a special type of play session with their own children. The Play Therapist trains, supervises and supports the parents as they learn this method and helps them to understand what their child/children may be communicating through their play. In time, the parents can conduct the play sessions in their own home.

Filial Play Therapy takes a certain amount of commitment yet its benefits make the effort worthwhile. It can also be used to strengthen parent-child relationships in order to prevent problems.

My family, me, my husband and our 15 year old son had Family Therapy from Helen for 6 months in 2016.

Although a little unsure of what would be expected of us, we were put at ease immediately by Helen. I was unsure if my son would like the therapy and if he would want to continue.

We soon loved the sessions and we all looked forward to going. We loved the games and activities which Helen gently led us through. This enabled us to interact more positively with each other. The atmosphere slowly became calmer at home. The activities broke through assumptions we all had of each other and allowed us space to look at how we interact with each other.

I’d highly recommend Helen and the therapy to any family especially if there is ongoing tension for whatever reason. Helen has a gentle approach but we felt completely confident in her assessment of what we needed in each session.

I’ve just asked my son and he said he felt very welcomed, thought the drinks were important and loved the activities. Not bad for a 15 year old!

As parents it helped us to relax more, see things from our son’s perspective and to build on giving messages of love to him.” – Celia
